Republican ticket promoting President Grant and Vice President Wilson on the national level, and Governor Washburn and Lieutenant Governor Talbot on the Massachusetts state level. This would be Thomas Talbot's entry into gubernatorial politics and in 1874, upon Governor Washburn appointment to the US Senate seat vacated by the death of Charles Sumner, Talbot would become Governor for the first time.
