Gildon's Published Works

A Contested Question

Determining the authorship of works from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries with certainty is often challenging, as authors frequently published anonymously or under pseudonyms. While many of Gildon's works were published with his name on the title page or clearly identified in the dedication, many others were not.

While several scholars of Gildon's writings have confidently provided an authoritative list of Gildon's publications, this edition takes a more cautious approach. Rather than listing only the works that the editor confidently believes were published by Gildon, these lists of Gildon's works include all known works attributed to him with an evaluation of how credible the assertion is and documentation of arguments for more contested attributions.

As Gildon was a prolific editor of collections of the writings of others (sometimes adding compositions of his own, both silently and announced) as well as an author in his own right, this edition provides two bibliographies: one limited to the works authored by Gildon and another that includes all of Gildon's works, whether original works or edited collections.
