Letter From A Fifth Grade Student

Letter from a 5th grade student

As displayed in both the Kevin White and Louise Day Hicks collections, the idea of forced busing was challenged by the community since the beginning; it would be disingenuous to characterize the controversy as unforeseen. However, it was not only parents and city administrators that were aware of fight that was to come.

This letter, penned by an anonymous fifth grade student, was sent to Mayor White several months before busing began. In the letter, the student argues against forced busing, citing distance and the "pursuit of happiness" as reasons against it.
