Terms - Race and Ethnicity

Black –
Dictionary definition: of or relating to any of various population groups having dark pigmentation of the skin (within the exhibits, most often referring to slaves, or the descendants of slaves, from Africa)

Creole –
Dictionary definition: a person of mixed European and black descent, especially in the Caribbean
Historical definition: The descendants of European colonists who had been born in the colony (i.e. born in the Caribbean)

Indigenous –
Dictionary definition: produced, growing, living, or occurring natively or naturally in a particular region or environment (within the exhibits, referring to both naturally growing plants within the Caribbean, as well as, referring to the indigenous tribes that lived on the islands before colonization).

Native –
Dictionary definition:
a: an original or indigenous inhabitant (referring to person who is either indigenous or someone who was born and raised in an area)
b: something indigenous to a particular locality (referring to fruits, vegetables, and other plants growing in a certain area)

White –
Dictionary definition: being a member of a group or race characterized by light pigmentation of the skin (within the exhibits, most often referring to people of European decent)
