Keeping Up Tradition in the Caribbean

Although the necessity of the dish has changed over time, there are certainly still pockets of Caribbean culture that maintain a connection to the roots of this popular stew. In Guyana, traditional pepper pot soup is prepared over a span of two weeks leading up to Christmas day, when it is eaten as the first course of a traditional Christmas menu.

This tradition was featured in an NPR series titled "The 12 Days of Quirky Christmas Foods Around the Globe" in 2014. The article features photos and commentary from Cynthia Nelson, a Guyanese born food writer living in Barbados, who writes a regular food column for Guyanese newspaper The Stabroek News called "Tastes Like Home" and runs a blog of the same name as a place to facilitate conversation around Caribbean food and culture.
