Glimpses of Life in China - Walter G. Whitman

These bits of Whitman's letters about what he observed in China are about what he saw in the factories. There weren't all that many there. Sometimes, there were kids working because their families couldn't afford to send them to school.

Also, the fire station was very different than in America. They relied heavily on wooden goddesses to put out the fire rather than water. Their equipment was very inefficient in fighting a fire. The city didn't do much to support the fire station. [5]
