The Liberty Company

The Liberty Company

The American-Chinese restaurant, the Liberty Company, opened its doors in 1918 and could have been found on 133 Washington St, Salem MA. The advertisement that was promoting the Liberty Company showed the Liberty Bell in the top left corner, but what was even more significant was that there was no Chinese symbolism whatsoever. The Liberty Company was opened right in the middle of World War I, which lasted from 1914 until 1921. Typically during a war, patriotism is strong and so is the crave for liberty. I believe that only a liberty bell was shown to enhance the fact that during a time of war that America is built on liberty. Salem Lowe was opened before the Liberty Company and they had a symbolic Chinese Crane and also Chinese lettering, but there was no World War I present during the opening of Salem Lowe. In my opinion, there was no Chinese symbolism on the advertisement in order to promote more American symbolism in the wake of World War I.
