Immigrants from Poland

The refugees from Poland came to Salem in the 1800's. The Maritime Port, which is now known as the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, was a leading industrial center. These immigrants brought very little belongings with them upon their travels. They often worked in dangerous factory settings to earn money, while having to learn American language and culture. Their arrival had an impact on society and economy.
